Journalist Ross Gregory believes Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy is not at the level the club needs and his ‘confidence has gone’.

The Magpies look to have one of the most exciting projects in world football since their takeover by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, and as a result, they have worked hard in the transfer window to bolster the squad with more talent that can take them into the upper echelons of the Premier League.

And there are now a number of players that no longer meet the requirement to successfully impact the side and help take them into the new era. One of these players could be Murphy, who has struggled so far this season under Eddie Howe.

Gregory believes that this could be down to his lack of confidence and doubts whether Murphy is at the level that the club need to take them forward this season.

He told NUFC Matters: “No, he’s not [had the best of starts] and I feel for the lad. I’d love to see him do well at Newcastle, I really would. He’s a big Newcastle fan as well, I think that gets forgotten about a little bit.

“He’s maybe trying too hard, his confidence has gone when comes on.

“If we’re being honest, he’s probably just not at the level that Newcastle need now to move forward.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Gregory’s comments…

Whenever you bring in a number of new players, there are always going to be casualties in the side who will eventually be moved on for squad space and to recoup some finances in order to keep building.

It looks like Murphy could be one of these players in the not-so-distant future, as he has struggled to make a huge impact at the club since he arrived back in July 2017. The 27-year-old has made 113 appearances for the Tyneside club and has only picked up five goals and nine assists, which is perhaps not good enough given the club’s ambitions.

He has only managed to rack up 75 minutes on the pitch in the Premier League so far this season, and with the addition of Alexander Isak, he is only going to find it more difficult to make appearances – and even more so by the time Callum Wilson returns.

We feel a move away from the club would be the best thing for both Murphy and Newcastle as the player can find more game time elsewhere and the club can bring in some money for him before his value completely depletes.
