Journalist Jonny McFarlane believes Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is the best player at the club when he is fit – and would start him against Napoli at Ibrox tonight.
McFarlane was speaking on the Rangers Review podcast ahead of the Gers’ Champions League group stage fixture against Napoli this evening.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side face an incredibly tough task when they welcome the Serie A leaders to Glasgow this evening, after they were comfortably beaten 4-0 by Ajax in their group stage opener last week.
This evening’s fixture may see the return of Alfredo Morelos to the Rangers side after the Colombian played 30 minutes in the Old Firm derby defeat at Celtic following his red card at Hibernian in August.
But McFarlane believes that Van Bronckhorst needs to start Morelos – who has previously been described as “unreal” by The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell – in this evening’s European clash, as he is the club’s best player.
He said: “I’d throw Morelos in against Napoli, I’ve got to be honest.
“You’ve got to be careful, and we don’t know the sort of ins and outs of what’s gone on in the dressing room with Alfredo Morelos.
“But I think you need to get him back in and find a happy medium with that player.
“For me – and this may be controversial – I’m just going to say it, fit-and-firing Alfredo Morelos is still the best player at Ibrox.”
TIF Thoughts on McFarlane’s comments…
We believe that regardless of Morelos’ contract situation, Van Bronckhorst needs to be starting his best players when they are fit, especially in huge games such as this evening’s clash with Napoli.
Rangers know that if they don’t secure a victory from the game, a place in the last 16 of the Champions League will look to be a distant dream.
Therefore, we believe that it is only right for Van Bronckhorst to put aside any differences he may have with Morelos and play the striker to give the Gers the best possible chance of success this evening.
