Journalist Dan Bardell took to Twitter to slam Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard’s comments on the possible transfer of star midfielder Douglas Luiz, who only has a year left on his contract.
The Villans have been busy with incomings this window, with the likes of Diego Carlos, Boubacar Kamara and Philippe Coutinho to name a few. Still, with their new additions, they have not started the season well and currently find themselves 19th in the Premier League table.
This comes after their recent 2-1 loss to Arsenal, which makes it three losses in a row despite Luiz’s second-half equaliser. In the wake of the game, manager Gerrard was asked about Luiz’s future and claimed that he is not in control of a possible deal, and that while they don’t want to lose him, he only has a year left – hinting something may happen.
Luckily for Villa fans, the club have since stated they are not going to be selling their key man before the deadline. This comes after Bardell’s damning assessment of their need to keep him after stating ‘they are not good enough to be letting him go’.
This isn’t good enough 24 hours before window shuts.
We aren’t good enough to be letting him go either, wether he has 1 year on his contract or not. #AVFC https://t.co/p7MPMUiVKw

TIF Thoughts on Bardell’s comments…
Villa have done the right thing in not letting Luiz leave before the end of the window despite only having a year left on his contract, as Bardell is correct – they are simply not good enough to be letting him leave without a suitable replacement.
While Luiz has not been perfect by any means. He has on average, according to Sofascore, performed better than the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Coutinho in that midfield, and therefore, losing him will mean they have no backup for Kamara in that defensive midfield area.
They have a lot of work to do before the end of the season to better their final position last year, and with their current form, they may even find themselves in a relegation scrap. So we feel keeping a player like Luiz is integral. We saw on Wednesday night he has something to offer and they’d be foolish to let him go.
