Tottenham Hotspur’s main transfer focus at the moment is on selling players to free up space in the squad and the wage bill.

That is according to Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the Lilywhites’ potential transfer business, with the final two weeks of the transfer window upon us.

It has been an extremely busy summer at Spurs, with the club making seven signings so far this transfer window, whilst six players have departed the club, whether that be on a permanent or loan deal.

According to a report by the Evening Standard in July up to seven players (who haven’t already left) could depart the club by the time the transfer window is over, including players such as Tanguy Ndombele, and Harry Winks.

And Jones believes that this is currently the main focus at Hotspur Way at the moment.

“I mean, the main thing at Spurs, the focus has been on outgoings but, similar to what we were talking about Arsenal, that’s [not just] to get rid of players that just aren’t going to figure in the plans, but also to open up space in the squad and on the wage bill.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments

We believe that Tottenham’s transfer strategy makes sense, and it will make Antonio Conte’s life easier if he has a content and settled squad, rather than a bloated squad with players getting frustrated at their lack of minutes.

As well as this, we also think it makes sense for Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy to be clearing up the wage bill, as this could enable the club to bring in one or two more additions to the club before the transfer window is over.

Therefore, we believe that if Spurs could move on at least three players this summer, the club will be satisfied with the squad they have, and it will give Conte a higher chance of having a more harmonious squad heading into a Champions League campaign.
