Paul Merson has claimed he has a “sneaky feeling” about Tottenham Hotspur’s curtain-raiser on the weekend but expects them to take the three points.
The Sky Sports pundit has been writing for Sportskeeda in his latest column to provide his predictions for the first Premier League game week of the season.
Tottenham’s pre-season has been mixed in terms of results with two wins, one draw and one defeat in their final clash against Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.
And Antonio Conte will be going into the game against Southampton with a number of injury issues and suspensions to deal with as Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp look set to miss the game and Richarlison serves a one-game ban.
Despite the handful of setbacks Conte will have to deal with, Merson has backed Spurs to clinch the points in a 2-0 victory after an impressive transfer window so far:
“Tottenham have done well in pre-season. They’ve bought phenomenally well, and now they need to get these players together as a team. In the Premier League, you don’t get too long,” said Merson.
“I don’t think Southampton will do too well in the Premier League this season, but I’ve got a sneaky feeling about this game. I do like the way Tottenham have bought, though, and I think they’ll be able to win this game.”
TIF Thoughts on Merson’s comments…
We have to agree with Merson in his claims Spurs have had a strong transfer window which has seen Conte’s wishlist addressed ahead of the Premier League opener.
What are your predictions for Saturday?
We will be interested to see how many of the new signings start the game on Saturday with Djed Spence having only made a brief cameo against Rangers this summer.
But we do think it is essential Spurs avoid any upset in N17 with their second game of the campaign against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge – a place Spurs have won once in the league in over 30 years.
