Journalist Graeme Bailey has claimed he would not be surprised if Newcastle United were to make a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.
At the time of writing, with just over a week left in the transfer window, the Magpies were still looking to bring in a top striker to compete with Callum Wilson for a starting spot, despite their good start to the season where the Englishman has already picked up two goals in three games.
One player they’ve been linked to who fits the bill is Everton striker Calvert-Lewin, but due to an injury the player sustained before the start of the season, the rumours have gone cold. However, Bailey believes the club could still go in for him before the end of the window if he is made available.
Bailey told the Fully Loaded Transfer Show: “The number-one target all summer was Calvert-Lewin. He hasn’t been mentioned recently because of his injury. If he was available, it wouldn’t surprise me if Newcastle went back in for him before the window shut.”
TIF Thoughts on Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle…
Since Bailey’s comments emerged on Tuesday night, Newcastle appear to have made progress in a deal for Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak to join the club – which would surely end their interest in Calvert-Lewin.
Despite the fact the Tyneside club are currently sitting sixth in the table and unbeaten through their first three games, a new striker was always likely to be atop their list of priorities to bring in before the end of the window.
Even though Wilson has taken the league by storm so far, adding a player of Calvert-Lewin’s ability and potential could take the team to the next level and certainly put them straight in the fight for a European finish.
The 25-year-old, who is statistically most similar to Chris Wood according to database FBref, only managed five goals in 17 Premier League appearances last season due to injuries, but when he last played an entire season during the 2020/21 campaign, he shone for the Toffees, with 21 goals and five assists in all competitions.
It might be difficult to prise the striker away from Goodison Park, especially considering the £60m price tag the club put on him. However, considering his recent injury record, they may yet get him for a discounted price.
Either way, £60m for a striker who can score over 20 goals a season is a great price.
But with the breaking news surrounding Isak, it does appear that the Magpies are taking a chance on the Sweden international instead.
