Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Goncalo Ramos has emerged as a target for Newcastle United this summer.

The Magpies were on the brink of signing Hugo Ekitike this summer, but due to issues with his agent, the deal fell through, and he has since joined Paris Saint-Germain, with Eddie Howe turning his attention to Ramos.

Newcastle are the latest Premier League side to show interest in Ramos this summer, with Wolves the other top-flight side tracking his progress.

With the Toon showing interest in Ramos, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he has been told Benfica are open to letting him leave in this summer transfer window.

He said: “Ramos has emerged as a target. I’m told that Benfica are open to letting him leave, and the manager is happy for him to be available.

“So, he’s been touted around England basically in the past couple of weeks, and there’s a few clubs that are taking a nibble at that interest, and Newcastle was one of them.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Ramos, who has been hailed as a ‘top young striker’, has recently turned 21 years old, and last season he impressed for Benfica, he chipped in with nine goal contributions in 29 league games, and this season he has continued his good form, scoring once and registering two assists in the opening three league games.

The Magpies opened their 2022/23 Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory as Callum Wilson got on the scoresheet, but they failed to score against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, so Howe might be keen to add another attacking option to his squad before the transfer window ends to bolster his frontline.

Benfica reportedly want £34m for their Portuguese striker this summer, so it will be interesting to see whether Newcastle cough up the money to acquire his services or walk away and look elsewhere for a new goalscorer.
