Injury specialist Ben Dinnery believes that Newcastle United’s Ryan Fraser could return to training this week after the winger recently complained of a lower back problem.
In order for Newcastle to finish in the top half or even push into the European places this season, they will need all hands on deck to give manager Eddie Howe the bodies he needs for rotation. Therefore, any key players returning from injury are going to give the side a huge boost.
One of these injured players who could be available for the Magpies’ next game against current champions Manchester City is Fraser, who according to Dinnery, could be back in training this week after picking up a lower back injury.
Dinnery said on the Premier FPL Injuries show: “Ryan Fraser, out of the matchday squad [v Brighton] after complaining of a lower back problem, a spasm. That kept him out of training on Thursday and Friday, but hopefully again, that will remedy himself over the next couple of days and we should see him back with the United squad, training.”
TIF Thoughts on Fraser’s injury…
Having already revealed that Matt Targett was likely to recover from the fitness issues that saw him miss the trip to the Amex Stadium, it is certainly positive that Dinnery is hopeful he is not the only Toon player on the mend ahead of the champions’ visit.
While the Magpies are looking to bolster their options for their starting core of players, with links to the likes of Lucas Paqueta and James Maddison, an important part of their development as a team will be the talent they can turn to on the bench.
Fraser would be a great player for this kind of role as he could be a tricky asset to bring on in the latter stages of games, and while the Scottish winger has not set the world alight since joining Newcastle, he did manage his best goals and assists return since joining the club last season with two and three respectively.
However, getting over a lower back injury can be difficult, and therefore giving Fraser slightly more time than he needs in order to recover fully could be the best thing, not only for Fraser’s season, but the team overall.
