YouTuber Conor McGilligan believes Leeds United should not look to sign striker Neal Maupay, as he is a ‘demonised’ character for fans and hasn’t hit expectations in the Premier League.

Despite spending big in the transfer market so far, it would appear that Leeds are still looking to bring in a striker, and have recently been linked with a move for Maupay, who wants to leave his current club Brighton before the end of the window.

However, in the wake of the rumours, McGilligan has stated that he would not want the Frenchman to sign for a couple of reasons, including his reputation among Whites fans and his ability to put the ball in the back of the opposition’s net.

McGilligan told the One Leeds Fan Channel: “He’s got an excellent goal record against Leeds, I believe he’s got five in seven. He’s scored more times against Leeds United than any other club. But he also has a bit of a demonised relationship, a controversial relationship with the Leeds United fans.

“I would say no. And I think the reason I would say no is because I think years ago, Brighton brought Neal Maupay in to be that striker who gave them that end product. You look at Brighton, they’re a superb team, excellent team to watch; fast, fluid dynamic football; a real problem for any team in the Premier League, and I include the top four in that.

“But I think the problem with Brighton for two, three, four years now has been the finished article. In the box, they’ve been poor, they’re not able to finish their dinner. They’re able to curate chances, they’re able to build up very nicely through the phases, but that finishing touch is never there.

“And I think Neal Maupay was brought in years ago to fill that void, and I don’t think he ever has done, so I would worry at him being at Leeds United.”

TIF Thoughts on Maupay to Leeds…

It is no secret that Leeds struggled to score an abundance of goals last season, picking up just 42 across the entire league campaign, which was only better than Wolves, Burnley, Watford, and Norwich City – while they have lost their top scorer in Raphinha, who bagged 11.

The club are going to be looking to replace Raphinha’s goals, and bringing in Maupay may not fill this void. Since the Frenchman joined Brighton & Hove Albion in 2019, he has not hit the same heights as Raphinha in terms of goals and has only managed to hit double digits once.

There are a lot of talented strikers who could be up for sale like Ollie Watkins, so bringing in a goal-deficient player like Maupay just makes no sense to us.
