Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Che Adams is the favourite to become Leeds United’s new forward.

Leeds have also been linked to Ben Brereton Diaz this summer over a potential move to the Premier League for the Chile international as Jesse Marsch is keen to add to his attacking options, but his asking price appears to make the Scotland striker a more likely acquisition.

On Saturday against Southampton, Patrick Bamford picked up an injury that forced him off in the 28th minute, and with backup striker Joe Gelhardt not fit enough for the bench, Daniel James had to come on and lead the line.

And amid links to the likes of Adams this summer, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that compared to other candidates such as Blackburn Rovers’ Brereton Diaz, the Saints foward is perhaps the safer bet to turn up at Elland Road before the window closes.

He said: “Brereton Diaz is the other one that they’ve been really keen on.

“The problem is he’s being valued at £25 million, and Leeds just aren’t going to go that high at the moment for Brereton Diaz. So, that’s why Che Adams is probably still the favourite if you were to put it in that sense, to join Leeds as the new forward.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Adams, who has been hailed as ‘terrific‘, is also attracting the attention of Everton, so it may not be straightforward for the Whites to bring him to West Yorkshire.

Meanwhile, Brereton Diaz really impressed in the Championship last season, finding the back of the net 22 times in 37 appearances and continuing his good form this season – scoring twice and assisting once in the opening three fixtures, which is what will have caught the eye of those at Leeds.

However, Diaz has not yet proven that he can perform in the top flight, so it might be deemed as a bit of a gamble if they were to spend as much as £25m on him.

Therefore, given Adams’ top-flight experience and potentially lower price tag, we can see why Jones believes the Scotsman will be the one Marsch takes a punt on in the coming weeks.
