Football pundit Paul Merson has tipped Everton to have another tough season this campaign after a poor start.

Everton struggled immensely throughout last season, but after Frank Lampard’s introduction in January, he did enough to help his side survive relegation to the Championship on the second to last day of the season, meaning that they finished 16th in the Premier League table.

However, this season they have not shown any signs of improvement, after losing both of their opening fixtures albeit the opening game was against Chelsea and the second loss was a narrow one against Aston Villa when they travelled to Villa Park and lost 2-1.

With Everton picking up zero points from a possible six so far, Merson told Sportskeeda that he expects the Toffees to be in for another tough season, but also said that he expects them to win this weekend against Nottingham Forest.

“I expect another tough season for Everton, but something tells me they’ll get all three points this weekend,” Merson said.

TIF Thoughts on Merson’s comments…

Although the Toffees have not had the best start to the 2022/23 campaign, they have made some important signings, and Conor Coady could really stabilise the defensive unit because he was the skipper for Wolves last season, where they had the fifth-best defensive record in the league, so Lampard might be hoping that he can replicate this.

Everton have also signed Amadou Onana on a five-year deal, he is just 21 years old and has already been named in the Belgium national squad, so he will be hoping to have an impact at the club, in order to earn himself a place in the World Cup squad in November.

It is too early to judge whether a side is going to have a poor season, but if the new signings don’t settle in quickly, then Merson could be right in his prediction that they might have another season of struggles, due to the form they displayed last term.
