Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Newcastle United have now given up on attempting to sign James Maddison.

Newcastle were one of the Premier League sides interested in signing Maddison this summer, but they had two offers rejected by Leicester City, with the second bid being in the region of £50m.

The Magpies have made just three signings this summer, and with Matt Targett already being in the building last season on loan, they have made just two new additions to the squad.

With the Magpies already having two bids rejected for Maddison, Jacobs spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he does not believe that they will return with another bid because of Leicester’s reluctance to sell:

“The briefing that I’ve been given from sources close to Newcastle’s owners is, for now, they’ve given up on James Maddison.

“They won’t return with a big bid at this point and that’s because they don’t believe that Leicester will sell,” Jacobs said.

With Newcastle yet to add an attacker to their squad, it will be interesting to see if Eddie Howe makes any big money moves between now and the end of the transfer window in order to bolster his offensive options for this season.

Maddison could have been a great option for Newcastle because he chipped in with 20 goal contributions last season in the Premier League, but they would have to spend over £50m on him, which they might not be keen to do because of FFP regulations.

However, it appears that they have turned their attention to another English creative midfielder in Conor Gallagher, who is now believed to be their number-one target, but the issue remains of whether they can convince Chelsea to let him join Howe and co at St James’ Park.
