Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has said that the future of Nnamdi Ofoborh remains unclear following the player’s heart issue.
Back in July 2021, former manager Steven Gerrard revealed that the midfielder would be out for a while with the club investigating a heart problem detected during medical checks (via The Athletic).
As a result of this, he is still yet to make a single appearance for Rangers, having been at the Scottish club for just over a year after joining from Bournemouth.
Speaking to writer Derek Clark in a clip shared on Twitter, Van Bronckhorst explained that he feels ‘really bad’ for Ofoborh, but his health is the most important thing right now.
He said: “I haven’t welcomed him on the pitch, I think Steven [Gerrard] also didn’t. He’s a player, of course, who had some problems, still has problems. And it’s a situation we have to be very careful about, to make sure we make the right decisions for first, the health of him. That process is still going.
“I don’t know what will happen in the future, but for me, the most important thing is health.”
He continued: “He comes to the training ground once in a while and he’s still one of the boys. If you see him, he’s very good with the boys and also very energetic and happy.
“I feel really bad for him that he cannot be on the pitch but eventually the most important thing is the health of anyone.”
TIF Thoughts on Nnamdi Ofoborh and Rangers…
Due to his heart condition, the 22-year-old last played a professional game of football when he faced Preston North End on loan with Wycombe Wanderers back in early 2021.
Having then joined Rangers the following summer, as mentioned before, Ofoborh is yet to play for the club, so this must have been a hugely frustrating year for the player.
Sadly, as made clear by Van Bronckhorst’s comments, it doesn’t seem as if a return to the pitch is likely to happen any time soon and so Ofoborh’s future remains uncertain for now.
