Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Jesse Lingard would love to join a club at the level of Tottenham Hotspur this summer – but only if he plays a big role.

Lingard is currently a free agent and Tottenham Hotspur are the one of the sides keen on acquiring him before the season starts, as he would add to the homegrown players they have in the squad.

The former England international was seriously out of favour last season at Manchester United, as he featured 16 times in the Premier League, but just two of those games were from the start.

Although Lingard has been linked with a move to Tottenham this summer, Jones claimed to GiveMeSport that he would only want to join a team if he is going to have a big role in the side, which might not happen at Spurs.

He said: “It’s always a nice luxury to have to bring in a player with that creativity that can add depth to the squad.

“I’ll be honest, with Lingard, he would love a club of that level, but only if he can sense a big role within that team and I’m not sure I see Jesse Lingard playing a big part in Tottenham’s team next season given what we’ve already seen from them last season and what we’ve seen this summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’s comments…

Interestingly, Son Heung-min is allegedly on wages of £140k per week, which is £10,000 less than Lingard’s reported demands of £150k per week.

Lingard spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan with West Ham United, where he impressed by scoring nine goals and chipping in with four assists in 16 Premier League games, but he opted to stay at his parent club last season where he was nothing more than an outcast.

There is proof that Lingard can perform when he is given the right amount of game time, but if he was to join Spurs, he might not be promised this, and we could see a similar situation to last season for him, so even though Conte might be keen for him to come in for depth, Lingard might opt against the move.
