Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are still pushing to secure the signing of wing-back Djed Spence from Middlesbrough this summer, despite an apparent lack of progress so far.

The north London outfit have stormed into the transfer market so far with the acquisitions of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perisic, while they have recently finalised a deal for Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet.

However, one of their top targets has been Spence, who impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, though a deal has failed to progress so far this window – and Sheth believes the two clubs are far from an agreement for the wing-back.

He said in an interview with Spurs YouTuber Chris Cowlin: “Tottenham still pushing to get the deal done. Djed Spence, by all accounts, wants to go to Tottenham. The information that I’m getting is that there is no full agreement yet between the clubs.

“A lot of the noise coming out about this deal – and what’s perceived to be positive noise about advanced negotiations, deal as good as done – I don’t think that’s coming from the Tottenham end at all. The information I’m getting is: no agreement yet.

“This one, I think could carry on negotiation-wise while Tottenham are on that pre-season tour – and maybe even after they come back.”

TIF Thoughts on Spence to Spurs…

While Spurs finished the season strong with a fourth-place finish, one area they still need to develop is the wing-back position, as Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon failed to consistently impress under Antonio Conte.

Spence is not the finished product yet, but he shone last season in the Championship. Across all competitions last season, he managed three goals and four assists while averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, one key pass and 1.7 dribbles per game, according to WhoScored.

It has been reported that the Teesside club are looking for £20m, which would be a club-record fee. With the injection of cash Spurs received from owners ENIC, there is no reason why they could not find the finances to complete the deal as soon as possible, so it seems they are simply unwilling to pay over the odds for Spence.
