According to Daily Mail journalist Sami Mokbel, Tottenham Hotspur could face a struggle to sign Everton starlet Anthony Gordon this summer as their previous move for Richarlison could have eased the Toffees’ financial problems.

It looks like Spurs are continuing to try to raid their Premier League rivals this summer as they eye a move for the 21-year-old who impressed in his debut season, with Tottenham only recently completing a £60m move for Richarlison earlier in the window.

However, Mokbel believes that sealing a deal for the Englishman will be tough as despite their money problems, the deal for Richarlison has helped – and they are reluctant to sell another prized asset.

He said on the Last Word on Spurs podcast: “I think it will be hard to get him out of Everton, particularly given Everton have just had the £60m from Richarlison.

“They obviously needed to balance the books – we know their precarious financial position.

“But I think the money for Richarlison will go a long way to easing those concerns.

“The interest in Anthony Gordon is absolutely genuine, I think they did have a conversation and I think they got very short thrift from Everton. I don’t think he’s a player that, if at all possible, that they want to sell.”

TIF Thoughts on Gordon to Spurs…

It is not surprising that the £18m-rated winger has garnered interest from a Premier League giant like Spurs after his impressive 2021/22 campaign. During the season, he managed to bag himself four goals and two assists in the Premier League while averaging 1.3 shots, 1.1 key passes, 1.1 dribbles and 1.5 tackles per game (WhoScored).

Gordon also showed his defensive abilities, which could attract Antonio Conte to play him as a wing-back. According to FBRef, he ranked in the 99th percentile for blocks with 2.28 per game and in the 96th for tackles, as well as in the 94th for pressures per game with 23.47 compared to other wingers across Europe’s top five leagues.

As reported by Mokbel, Everton rate Gordon very highly, and considering they have already sold one of their best assets in Richarlison and they struggled to survive last season, the Lilywhites could end up being unlucky in their pursuit.
