TalkSport’s Alex Crook has claimed that Southampton are among the clubs that would take Chelsea defender Levi Colwill if presented with the opportunity.
The defender enjoyed an incredible campaign with Huddersfield Town last season, reaching the Championship play-off final, before falling at the final hurdle against Nottingham Forest.
Back at Chelsea, Colwill would have been hoping to receive an opportunity, especially after the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively. The arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly arguably puts an end to that hope, however.
Now, a permanent move looks likely, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the list of clubs that would take the defender including Southampton, according to Crook, who told GiveMeSport: He’s got a lot of interest. Southampton, Bournemouth, Brighton as well down on the south coast, they’d all take him.”
TIF Thoughts on Crookes Comments…
Colwill – hailed an “amazing talent” – certainly proved himself at Huddersfield last season, making 32 appearances in all competitions as a result, despite being just 19. Yet, despite earning those minutes in the Championship, it doesn’t look like he’ll get the chance to impress at Stamford Bridge, with a permanent move likely.
Should the Saints sign Colwill?
Yes
No
As for Southampton, if presented with the opportunity, we think they should take Colwill. The defender would freshen things up at the back for the Saints, with their backline conceding the fourth most goals last season.
If he does end up at St. Mary’s this summer, then Colwill will be following in the footsteps of fellow academy graduate Tino Livramento, who made the permanent move to Southampton last summer – flourishing ever since. Playing week in, week out certainly helped Livramento, who made an impressive 2.25 progressive passes per-90 last season, and it would likely have the same impact on Colwill’s development.
