Dean Jones has made a reassuring claim that Manchester United are still in the driving seat to land Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez this summer.

The centre-back has, of course, worked under Erik ten Hag before and follows the theme of current Manchester United targets – that theme being those who have experienced life under Ten Hag previously.

As of right now, United still look in pole position to sign Martinez. Speaking on the Football Terrace’s Done Deal Show, Jones said“From the calls I’ve made and from the messages I’ve had from people that inform me on the information around this deal, it sounds like United are in the driving seat.”

Arsenal, of course, also have Martinez in their sights. But, the Gunners, as of right now, look lower down the pecking order when compared to United. According to Fabrizio Romano, the central defender is a priority for Ten Hag. Meanwhile, Martinez, himself, has reportedly always been tempted by a reunion with his former manager.

With well over a month until Deadline Day, the Red Devils have plenty of time to get a deal over the line, and it seems as though both United and the player want it to happen; it’s just about finding the right price for Ajax, it seems based on Jones and Romano’s reports.

TIF Thoughts on Lisandro Martinez…

When looking at the statistics, Martinez could be the exact improvement that Manchester United need. The Manchester club struggled defensively last season, conceding 57 goals – the eighth-worst in the Premier League.

After what was a dismal 2021/22 campaign for Harry Maguire, it would certainly be interesting to see what Martinez’s potential arrival could mean for his spot in Ten Hag’s starting XI.
