Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on Everton’s pursuit of Maxwel Cornet while speaking on the Wondergoal podcast.

Everton have thus far managed to bring in just one new player in the form of free agent James Tarkowski, however, he doesn’t appear to be the only player on the Toffees’ transfer radar from the Clarets.

That’s because Cornet, who finished the season as Burnley’s top scorer with nine goals, is said to be of interest at Goodison Park, which could be a top addition having been labelled as ‘fantastic‘ by Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane, while no Everton player registered more league goal involvements than the Ivory Coast international’s tally of 10 last term.

Romano has claimed that Everton are now trying hard to find a solution in their pursuit of Cornet.

He said: “One of the players they are keeping an eye on, for example, is Cornet, this winger who is really appreciated, he has a release clause of around £20m, and it could be a good possibility for Everton and they are trying to find a solution.”

TIF Thoughts on Everton targeting Cornet…

It makes a lot of sense that Everton are trying to sign the ‘fantastic’ winger as he’s Premier League-proven, can play in several different positions and has a relatively low release clause, which would help the Toffees improve their squad while not stretching their budget too much.

However, it’s difficult to understand what solution Everton are trying to find in their pursuit of Cornet as they will just have to activate his release clause and discuss personal terms, and with it being so low, it would appear unlikely that Burnley would accept a lower offer, especially considering there is reported interest from other Premier League clubs such as Nottingham Forest.
