Tottenham Hotspur feel their transfer target Alessandro Bastoni could be the long-term successor to their former centre-back, Jan Vertonghen.
This has been suggested by the reliable Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold as he issued the latest on the Italian’s future on the latest episode of the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast.
It is believed the Inter Milan centre-back is high up on Antonio Conte’s wishlist for this summer’s window but it is said they are needing to persuade the 23-year-old to join.
Reports suggest Bastoni is still unsure over whether this is the right time for him to make the leap and leave his homeland and switch to the Premier League.
And amid these reports, Gold believes those within Spurs do feel Bastoni would potentially need to be given more time to find his feet than Romero did this season:
“And even he as a target is an interesting choice. Because from everything I hear out of Spurs, they’re not expecting him to be like a Romero type.
“He’s not an aggressive front-foot defender. They see him more as a potential heir to Jan Vertonghen that may be more laid back kind of languid defender who’s very good on the ball.
“And perhaps that’s another aspect to it, perhaps, you know, Bastoni knows that and he knows that his adaptations of Premier League might be slightly slower than Romero’s. And maybe that’s a slight concern at this stage.”
TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…
It is apparent Spurs are facing a big challenge in convincing Bastoni to make the move with the money involved to bring him to N17 not believed to be an issue.
Are you hopeful Bastoni will join Spurs?
Yes
No
However, if he does join we do not think Spurs fans should be concerned by this suggestion from Gold with it saying more about how well Romero took to life in England than Bastoni’s ability.
Romero was hailed by Jamie Carragher as his best signing of the season and having made the move from Serie A, potentially, the Argentine could be a huge help to Bastoni if he decides to join the Lilywhites.
But if Spurs do see Bastoni as the heir to Jan Vertonghen, this should certainly be a huge boost to the Italian given how highly-rated the Belgian was in N17.
If he takes a while to get use to the Premiere League, so it takes him time.. I’ll be happy as long as he gets here.
If reliable means stating the obvious and never informing us of anything we don’t already know then Gold is extremely reliable
