Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed on The Done Deal Show that Yasir Al-Rumayyan wishes to bring a ‘marquee name’ like Gareth Bale to Newcastle United – but there is little substance to the rumours of a switch to Tyneside for the Welshman.
Bale is currently on the lookout for a new club having run down his previous deal with La Liga giants Real Madrid, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle and Getafe appearing to be potential destinations for the 32-year-old.
According to freelance journalist Sean Casey, Bale has already spent some time on Tyneside ahead of a potential move, which would certainly be a big-name signing that would likely grab the attention of many clubs in England and across Europe.
However, although Jacobs believes Newcastle chairman Al-Rumayyan would love to bring a player like Bale to Tyneside, there has been no approach at this moment in time.
Should Newcastle sign Bale?
He said: “Really, the link between Bale and Newcastle comes directly from Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the Newcastle United chairman, who enjoyed watching Bale at Real Madrid and would like a marquee name, but there’s nothing much to that and Newcastle haven’t made any active approaches.”
TIF Thoughts on Newcastle going for Bale…
Bale has enjoyed a very successful career, managing to lift 20 pieces of silverware including five Champions League trophies, but none of that appears to have gone to his head, with Casey recently claiming (30:00) that he read something from Jose Mourinho about how good the winger was in and around the dressing room during his recent loan spell at Spurs.
This could be a huge green light for Eddie Howe to perhaps move for Bale as an experienced winner who can still perform at the top level, judging not only by how often and well he plays for Wales, but also by his ability to lead, especially if players who are the older heads currently in the dressing room such as Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie end up leaving.
Jacobs’ comments, however, suggest that although there is an appetite for a marquee arrival at St James’ Park, perhaps Bale is not seen as someone suited to this current Toon squad.
