Leeds United need to sign Sheffield United’s ‘monster’ Sander Berge from the Championship in the summer transfer window after his stock has fallen due to his club, according to journalist Conor McGilligan.

The Yorkshire team have started the transfer window well by already signing American attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson from RB Salzburg in the Austrian league, and it looks like their business is not done, as the latest rumours link them with Sheffield United’s 6ft 5in midfielder Berge.

After a terrible 2021/22 campaign at Leeds, the club are looking to build around their manager Jesse Marsch after he kept them in the Premier League for another season despite only winning one of his last five games, which came on the last day of the season to keep them up.

Their latest rumour amid the rebuild involves Berge, who has played well during his time at the Blades in the Premier League and the Championship, with McGilligan citing that he has been impressed with the Norwegian.

He said on the One Leeds Fan Channel: “Sander Berge is a [6ft 5] monster, and Sander Berge, his profile’s not as high anymore because he’s still with Sheffield United, [24] years of age, £20m on him…”

TIF Thoughts on the Berge rumours…

It is no secret that Leeds need to bolster their squad and rebuild, so signing an experienced player for a friendly deal of around £20m, as proposed by McGilligan, makes complete sense and would allow the Whites to address other areas of the squad without breaking the bank.

The 24-year-old, who was labelled a ‘Rolls-Royce‘ of a footballer by teammate Rhian Brewster a year ago, has shown his midfield versatility this past season, playing in defensive midfield, centrally, and in an attacking role throughout the season. This would give Leeds a player who can be moved around the squad as Marsch implements his vision and style into his side.

Berge racked up six goals and four assists this season with only two yellow cards to his name in 35 appearances. He also averaged 1.1 shots, 1.3 dribbles, 0.8 key passes, 1.1 tackles and 1.5 long balls, as well as an 82.7% passing accuracy (as per WhoScored). Leeds should move for the young midfielder and get a deal over the line before another team spot his potential and beat them to the punch.
