Journalist Conor McGilligan has slammed the touted transfer fee Leeds United will have to pay for Gustavo Hamer.

Having only just survived the threat of Premier League relegation last season, the Whites will no doubt look to improve their squad next season.

One man who could potentially come in and provide some depth in the middle of the park in the near future is the Coventry City man.

Indeed, the Brazilian has been linked with a move to Leeds, but journalist Andy Turner recently told Sussex Live that the player is worth around the £9-10m mark.

Having watched Hamer in person, McGilligan said that valuation was a ‘joke’, despite the 24-year-old being a ‘decent player’.

While talking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, he said: “I’ve known about Gustavo Hamer for a while, just because I’ve done a bit of work in and around Coventry.

“I don’t know whether or not he is ready for that step up to the Premier League. He is decent, he is a good player, but it’s almost that lower-bracket Championship in Coventry, that lower to bottom-bracket Championship quality, really.

“So, he’s a decent player, but I mean, £9-10m is an absolute joke.”

TIF Thoughts on Gustavo Hamer and Leeds…

In the season just passed, Coventry finished 12th in the Championship table, with Hamer a regular cog in the team, playing in 39 of their fixtures.

There’s no doubting the quality he brought to the team, too, as he provided 10 assists and three goals, despite largely operating as a central defensive midfielder.

But as McGilligan makes clear, his side only ended up in the middle of the table, so it remains unclear as to whether or not he could make the step up to the Premier League – especially as he has never played in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Which comedian supports the Whites?

Perhaps Hamer would be worth a punt at the right price, especially as he is still only 24 – however, by the sounds of it, £9-10m is a little on the steep side for Leeds.
