Journalist Tim Spiers has explained how current Wolves target Ivan Toney nearly joined the club in the past and was even ‘in the building’ at one point.

In recent times, the Brentford striker has been linked with a possible summer move to the Molineux as the club consider a move for a new forward

While Spiers suggested that a transfer was looking unlikely at this stage, he did however explain that there has been an interest in Toney for ‘years’ now, and he nearly joined the club some time ago.

Speaking on the Talking Wolves YouTube channel, he said (1:05:00): “They’ve looked at him for years. I think they had him in the building at one point ready to sign, but I’d be amazed if Brentford let him go to Wolves.”

TIF thoughts on Ivan Toney and Wolves…

Wolves are said to be keen on signing a new striker so it’s no surprise to see them linked with Toney. Indeed, he had enjoyed a fine season with Brentford, scoring 14 goals and adding six more assists in all competitions.

Journalist Peter O’Rourke recently mooted the move too, telling GIVEMESPORT: “Wolves are very much in the market for a new striker this summer. It’s a key position for Bruno Lage, and if he wants to sign someone like Toney – he’s ready-made for the Premier League.

Do you remember who Wolves signed Ivan Cavaleiro from?

“He knows what it’s all about, it wouldn’t be a gamble for him. And I think Ivan Toney’s really proved himself to be a good enough player to play in the Premier League, when a lot of people maybe doubted that when he was signed by Brentford in the first place from Peterborough.”

However, while this deal might make a lot of sense in theory – especially as he nearly joined the club before – in reality, as Spiers makes clear, a transfer does not look likely at this point in time.
