Crystal Palace podcaster Dan Cook revealed on the HLTCO podcast this week that conditions around signing Conor Gallagher on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window, claiming it would have to be through another loan.

Crystal Palace has enjoyed a great resurgence season under new boss Patrick Vieira as they finished 12th in the table with a positive goal difference for the first time in their Premier League history after losing seven first-team players including Gary Cahill, Patrick van Aanholt, Andros Townsend, and Mamadou Sakho.

A big reason for their great season, along with the managerial job from Vieira, has been the players they’ve bought in. Joachim Andersen, Marc Guehi, Michael Olise, and Conor Gallagher have been standouts with the latter impressing so much he was shortlisted for the Premier League Young Player of the Year award.

As a result of this great season, the Eagles are reported to be very interested in signing the England international again in the summer, but it has recently been revealed that getting him on a permanent move will be tougher than expected, according to Cook.

He said on his podcast, “It’s become quite clear, since Christmas really, that any deal for Conor Gallagher that sees him not playing in Chelsea blue next season will be another loan to make sure he gets more experience rather than a permanent transfer because regardless of Chelsea’s potential willingness to see him leave the football club the fee that has been placed on his shoulders would be far too big for Crystal Palace to even entertain putting an offer in on. I believe it’s something within the region of 50 to 60 million pounds”.

TIF Thoughts on Gallagher’s transfer chances…

I think regardless of how they will be able to sign the young player, Palace will certainly do everything they can to get his signature, be that for another year loan or on a permanent deal. Coughing up that sort of money will always be tough but especially for a side whose record signing currently sits at £28.08 million.

If Palace cannot find the money to sign him permanently they should try and sign him for another loan deal, which Chelsea would probably take. They can use the fact that Gallagher earned his first England call up during his season at Palace and the plaudits he has received during this time as well.

He managed eight goals and five assists for Palace this season, ranking second in the team for both stats. He also managed to rank in the 96th percentile for non-penalty goals, 92nd for non-penalty expected goals plus xG assisted, 92nd for dribbles completed, 93rd for touches in the attacking penalty area, and 93rd for pressures. While the price tag is enormous for a player with one good season under his belt and is unable to get into the Chelsea first team, he has shown himself to be an integral part of Vieira’s system at Palace and therefore they should do what they can to sign him.
