Pundit Frank McAvennie has claimed that it is a real shame that Andriy Yarmolenko is leaving at the end of the season due to his contract expiring.

West Ham United winger Yarmolenko has had a frustrating season after he has had distractions off the pitch, from issues in his home country, and then being out of favour when he has been ready to play. He has made 18 appearances in the Premier League, but 17 of those have come from the bench.

The Ukrainian winger’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and with the direction that the club is heading and his lack of game time, it may be the best move for all parties that he moves on.

With Yarmolenko leaving at the end of the season, McAvennie highlighted to West Ham Zone that it is a real shame he has not got another chance.

“Yeah I think the boy’s head is battered and you can see it because, if you think about what’s happened in his country

“I don’t know where the boy is going to go, it’s just a shame. There’s not much you can say about him.

“He’s been a good servant and he’s never got a chance to fight. This year was his chance to go and fight for a contract, and it must be horrible when you think what’s happening to your friends and family back home. It must be horrible situation the boy’s in.

“It’s a shame he’s not got another chance, another year on his contract. But he’ll get a club. Hopefully he doesn’t lose too many people and he can get on with his career,” McAvennie said.

TIF Thoughts on McAvennie’s comments…

Yarmolenko promised so much when he signed for the Hammers from Borussia Dortmund in 2018 but he has failed to have a recognisable impact, after failing to make more than 23 Premier League appearances in any of the four seasons he has been at the club.

It is a disappointing end for Yarmolenko at West Ham because this could have been the season that he cements his place in the side, but it is clear that issues off the pitch have had a major impact on him, which is understandable, so it is most likely best for all parties that he parts ways with the club.
