Newcastle United have the intention of making Matt Targett’s move to Tyneside permanent this summer after his initial short-term loan.

This is according to journalist Dean Jones, who has been speaking to This Is Futbol ahead of the summer transfer window opening next month.

Do you want Targett to join permanently?

No

No

Targett joined the Magpies back in January from Aston Villa after Steven Gerrard acquired Lucas Digne from Everton, a move which left the left-back ‘surprised’.

However, on Tyneside, Targett took no time to settle into Eddie Howe’s side and has been a prominent feature in his starting XI with 15 appearances in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old has already spoken of his desire to stay at St. James’ Park for the foreseeable future and Jones does believe it is something the Toon are aiming to do this summer:

“They fully intend to go ahead with Matt Targett and try to sign him. It’s easier to sign somebody that’s already settled within the squad and within the setup and understands where they’re heading. And he’s done well for them,” said Jones.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We think this would be a great deal for all parties. Targett clearly wants to stay put in the north-east and Villa seemingly moved on in January through the signing of Digne.

“I think everyone knows what I want, but it’s up to the club,” the left-back told NUFC TV (via The Northern Echo).

And it is apparent he has played a huge role in Newcastle’s redemption from relegation candidates having played every minute of action since joining – bar the game against his parent side.

We feel it would be the sensible option for the club to bring Targett in permanently, however, the club has big aspirations for the future so who knows what they are thinking ahead of the summer window.
