Sky Sports presenter Joe Thomlinson can’t believe the major transfer error that Arsenal technical director Edu made following their latest defeat.

Arsenal, who had the top four in their grasp just last week, now head into the last game of the season two points behind their city and league rivals in need of Tottenham Hotspur to slip up away to Norwich City after the Gunners recorded back-to-back defeats.

Should Arsenal have signed Guimaraes?

The Gunners could well look back to the January transfer window as a time of the season that cost them as they didn’t improve the playing squad despite having a reported interest in Bruno Guimaraes – the man who sealed all three points for Newcastle United last night.

Guimaraes has recently admitted that despite media claiming the Gunners held an interest in him, no offer came about and he only wanted to join Newcastle – something Thomlinson highlighted on Twitter.

Where did Arsenal sign these players from, let's start with an easy one! Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Last night saw Arsenal play with Mohamed Elneny, who until recent weeks, was nothing more than a squad player, so for him to now be a regular under Mikel Arteta only goes to show how transformative a new midfielder may have been in January, especially someone like Guimaraes.

The Brazil international has already set the league alight with five goals and one assist in 10 starts for Newcastle, and when the Magpies registered their interest, it may have made sense for Arsenal – who could have offered a more luxurious plan in terms of playing European football – to have approached the player and Lyon at the very least.
