Newcastle United could be open to the possibility of selling their main striker, Callum Wilson, in the summer transfer window.

That is according to football journalist Dean Jones who has been speaking to This Is Futbol about the summer window ahead for the Tyneside club.

Would you be willing to sell Wilson?

No

And the transfer insider believes if the right offer was to arrive for the 30-year-old striker, the Toon could be tempted to sell their top scorer.

This summer will be the first summer window the new owners at St. James’ Park will have been at the helm since taking over in the latter stages of last year.

Newcastle spent big in the January window with the addition of four permanent players and are already being linked to some big names ahead of the summer.

There will likely be a lot of attention as to who may come through the doors at Newcastle this summer, but Jones feels there could be a big departure if the right bid arrives for Wilson:

“I think Callum Wilson will be a backup option, at best. He’s not going to be their main striker going forward in terms of the ambition that they’ve got and where they want to get to. So I think if a good offer came in for him, then they could become open to that,” said Jones.

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We think this may go down with a mixed response from the Newcastle fans given Wilson’s contribution over the last season and a half on Tyneside.

The striker was Newcastle’s top scorer last season with 12 Premier League goals and – despite being sidelined since December – is still Eddie Howe’s top scorer this season.

However, we think Jones does bring up an interesting possibility and we do not think it should be discounted given the striker’s injury record.

Wilson has shown since arriving on Tyneside he is unable to remain fit for the entirety of the season and for where the Toon want to go, having your main goalscorer out for half a season is not a viable option.
