Pundit Kris Boyd has stated that the abuse at the end of the Old Firm derby towards referee Bobby Madden was obscene and had nothing to do with the result.

Sunday was the semi-final of the Scottish Cup and Rangers came out 2-1 winners after a Carl Starfelt own goal in the 114th minute was enough to secure the victory for the Gers. Had they lost, it would have given their arch-rivals a chance to secure a treble, so it was a huge win for Rangers.

However, there has been a lot of controversy after the game surrounding some of the decisions made by referee Madden against Celtic.

Boyd wrote in The Scottish Sun and made his feelings clear that the slander Madden has received was not justified and the players should be the only ones accountable for the loss.

He said: “Bobby Madden had a better game than Tom Rogic. He made fewer mistakes than Liel Abada.

“In the big moments, he coped far more than Cameron Carter-Vickers. And by time-up, he’d put in as much effort as Daizen Maeda. So please, do me a favour and spare me this nonsense that it’s the referee’s fault Celtic lost to Rangers at Hampden. Rangers won because they were the better team.”

TIF Thoughts on Kris Boyd’s comments…

The victory on Sunday afternoon was a huge one for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, as Celtic currently sit top of the Scottish Premiership and are six points ahead of Rangers, so they have one hand firmly on the trophy. The Hoops have already won the League Cup this season, so the prospect of a treble-winning campaign just a year after Rangers finally broke Celtic’s domestic dominance is one the Gers will be relieved to have put to bed.

The tables have turned, as Rangers now find themselves in the semi-final of the Europa League and the final of the SFA Cup, so if they come away with two trophies, the first season in charge at Ibrox for Van Bronckhorst would certainly be deemed as a success.
