Glasgow Rangers supporters will be fuming after a photo of Cameron Carter-Vickers’ tug on Connor Goldson during the Old Firm derby emerged.

On Sunday, the Gers’ hopes of retaining the league title suffered a massive blow as they were beaten 2-1 at Ibrox. The hosts had taken the lead through Aaron Ramsey, but goals from Tom Rogic and Carter-Vickers turned the game on its head.

With 12 minutes remaining and the visitors in the lead, Carter-Vickers appeared to grab defender Goldson’s shirt as the two jostled in the penalty area prior to a corner. Ultimately, referee Willie Collum decided against awarding a spot-kick but, as a photo circulating on social media (which comes from Sky Sports footage) showed, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men certainly had grounds to appeal.

TIF Thoughts on the ‘foul’ on Goldson…

We have seen penalties given for such misdemeanours in the past. Carter-Vickers clearly has a large chunk of Goldson’s shirt in his hand as the corner comes across, with The Guardian’s live text coverage of the game labelled it ‘risky defending’ from the USA international.

Rangers have previous with Collum – in 2018, the Gers were fined £6,000 after questioning the official’s performance after Daniel Candeias was sent off during a 2-0 win over St. Mirren, while Collum was even removed as referee from the previous Old Firm derby in February after initially being given the match.

The Bears could use this decision as an excuse for the disappointing result, but at the end of the day, they did not do enough to pick up all three points.

It was a hard-fought game between the two rivals – worthy of a title race – and both goalkeepers made superb saves when called upon. Rangers dominated possession, having the ball for 61% of the time, but managed just one more shot on target than their opponents, illustrating the difficulties they had in getting in behind the Hoops.

Who followed James Tavernier to Rangers from Wigan Athletic in the same season?

Celtic now lead by six points with as many games remaining. The two sides will meet once more in the league before the season is out, but barring a surprising turn of events, the trophy will be on its way to Parkhead.
