Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur may look to break their transfer record in the summer when recruiting a defender.

Antonio Conte famously opts for a three-at-the-back formation, and it has typically been Ben Davies who has occupied the left side next to Eric Dier and Cristian Romero.

Davies has been impressive in the back three, but he is naturally a left-back, so in terms of long-term plans, Conte will most likely be keen to bring in a natural central defender in that slot.

With the current transfer record at Spurs being held at £53.8m by Tanguy Ndombele, O’Rourke claimed to GiveMeSport that Spurs may look to break this record when looking for a new defender.

He said: “I think for Tottenham, for the right man and the right target, I’m sure they would look to maybe break that transfer record; Ndombele holds that record right now.”

TIF Thoughts on Pete O’Rourke’s comments…

Spurs recently disappointingly lost against Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 at home, but this loss was an uncharacteristic one, as Conte’s side had won four on the bounce before this, whilst scoring 14 and conceding just twice. Two goals conceded in four games is a testament to the solidity of the Spurs backline.

However, you can see why Spurs could benefit from another defender. With Tottenham potentially playing in the Champions League next season, they will surely need to upgrade their side to compete in the competition, so although Davies has done well filling in, it may be time to invest big in a household name at the back.

If Spurs do invest in another central defender, this could allow Davies to move back to a more natural position, as current left-back Sergio Reguilon has been linked with a move back to Real Madrid.
