Alasdair Gold has shared some damning statistics from Tottenham Hotspur’s latest defeat – and one stood out above the rest.

After a great run of form which saw Antonio Conte’s side rise up into the Champions League spots with four wins in a row and score an impressive 14 goals in the process, they were brought back down to earth by Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, losing 1-0 in added time to the Seagulls.

However, neither West Ham United nor Arsenal managed to pick up wins last weekend either, which has seen Spurs remain in a controlling position and looking good to finish inside the top four come the end of the season.

However, this doesn’t mean that Conte won’t be furious with the performance and result, with Spurs managing zero shots on target in the entire game, while Gold also pointed out that Spurs’ average positions were a lot deeper than their opponents’, despite the difference in the two teams’ recent form and positions in the league table, something that will be ‘particularly bewildering‘ for Conte.

While sharing his report on Football.london, Gold wrote on Twitter: “Plenty of damning stats that show exactly why Antonio Conte was so disappointed with his Spurs players at the weekend. Their average positions over the 90 minutes compared to Brighton’s were particularly bewildering.”

TIF Thoughts on Spurs’ performance v Brighton…

The fact that only Harry Kane and Son Heung-min had an average position in Brighton’s half at home with the top four on the line will be extremely worrying for Conte, who would have likely wanted his team to play a lot higher up and pressing opponents who like to have the ball, with the Seagulls averaging the fourth-highest possession percentage in the league.

Conte will be hoping that the performance against Brighton can be one that reminds his players they aren’t yet the finished article despite a stunning run of recent form, and that hard work and top performances will be the only way they get into the top four this season.
