Journalist and writer Jonathan Wilson has suggested Mohamed Salah should not play for Liverpool against Manchester United this evening.

After securing safe passage to the FA Cup final on Saturday, beating Manchester City 3-2 at Wembley, Liverpool now host the Red Devils at Anfield. The two are separated by 19 points in the table, but the Reds are in a fierce Premier League title race, as they sit just one point behind the leaders.

How well do you know these Liverpool squad numbers? Starting off with an easy one: Mo Salah

Wilson was speaking about Salah’s latest form on the latest episode of Edge of the Box, and suggested the Egyptian should sit the game out. He said: “At the start of the season, I was sort of thinking this is as good as I’ve ever seen him. And there has been a regression since.

“I wonder whether he’d even start this game – Liverpool have options now, and maybe it makes sense to give him a bit of a break and use some of those other options.”

TIF Thoughts on Salah…

It is true that Salah’s form has dropped off a little recently. He has scored just once in his last five league matches, and after disappointing losses in the Africa Cup of Nations final and Egypt’s World Cup play-off, with the Pharaohs losing both on penalties to Senegal, he looks a little jaded.

Still, this is a player who has an astonishing 158 goals in 244 games for Liverpool and is currently one of the best footballers on the planet. Liverpool remain in the hunt for what would be a historic quadruple – quite frankly, every single game they have left this term is crucial.

Should Salah start vs United?

No

As a result, it would be madness to leave the £90m-valued Salah out unless he is truly not fit to play. No one has scored more than his 20 Premier League goals this term, and he remains a constant threat. With no international football to worry about this summer for the winger, he will have time to rest in the off-season. For now, though, Jurgen Klopp needs him, and it would be silly to take him out of the side.
