Journalist Keith Downie has claimed that Bernd Leno is on the radar of Newcastle United ahead of the summer transfer window.

Leno has been out of favour at Arsenal this season, with Aaron Ramsdale brought into the club in the summer from Sheffield United. The German ‘keeper has featured in just four Premier League games this season and has conceded nine goals in total.

With Eddie Howe reportedly eyeing up competition or even an upgrade on current No 1 Martin Dubravka, Downie spoke to GiveMeSport and identified the Magpies’ interest in Leno.

He said: “It’s interesting the goalkeeping one, I have to say, because there has been a few names that have gone around, one is Bernd Leno at Arsenal.

“I have been asked about him, so that name has been put to me by someone who would know someone involved.”

TIF Thoughts on Keith Downie’s comments…

Bernd Leno was Arsenal’s No 1 goalkeeper last term, featuring 35 times in the Premier League. However, the season was deemed as a failure for the Gunners as they finished eighth in the Premier League.

Despite Leno being out of favour this season, this is more of a testament to how good Aaron Ramsdale has been and not necessarily down to the poor form of the German. Leno has indeed been praised by Mikel Arteta for his attitude and performances this year.

It could be argued that Leno is far too good to be a backup ‘keeper given his experience, so if he was to make the move to Newcastle, it would be beneficial for both parties as he would get regular game time, assuming that he would surely only make a move if he was to be the Magpies’ No 1.
