Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson could well be done for the 2021/22 campaign as he continues his injury rehabilitation.

That is according to the Sky Sports reporter, Keith Downie, who has been speaking to This Is Futbol amid the Premier League run-in.

Wilson has endured another long-term injury this season with a calf issue seeing him out of action since December’s game against Manchester United.

The 30-year-old still remains the Toon’s top goalscorer for the Premier League campaign with six goals despite just playing 15 times this season.

However, with just six games remaining for the current season, Downie believes Wilson may not feature again with a focus put on him making a full recovery ahead of the 2022/23 campaign:

I mean, this is just purely going from my kind of sort of gut instinct on it. I mean, I think Wilson, he‘ll do well to play again this season,” said Downie.

“Now, obviously it hasn’t been ruled out. But I think the nature of the injury is one you need to be really careful with.

TIF Thoughts on Downie’s comments…

We think this would make a lot of sense given the position the Tyneside club find themselves in now in the league table with safety all but confirmed.

Wilson, who is valued at £18 million (as per Transfermarkt), arrived at Newcastle with a known track record of numerous long-term injuries so it will be crucial the striker is able to fully recover.

However, it does not put much confidence in being able to rely on Wilson in the long-term given he has now missed the majority of the season as a result of the injury.
