Newcastle United secured a huge three points in their hunt to retain their Premier League status for next season on Friday night.

The Magpies battled hard for a 1-0 win at St James’ Park over Wolves as Chris Wood’s second-half penalty was enough to settle the tie for the hosts, who look all but safe now with not many games remaining.

Bruno Guimaraes managed to get people talking with his actions on the pitch, looking baffled by the decision to substitute him. Journalist Chris Waugh noted on Twitter the surprise from the Brazilian, who didn’t ‘look happy’ about coming off.

Waugh had the following to say: “Sean Longstaff replaces Bruno Guimaraes, who receives a standing ovation as he departs. He didn’t look happy about coming off. He kept pointing at himself in surprise, but high-fives Howe & Tindall.

Clearly, there’s no actual issue here with the manager after high-fiving him when coming off – more frustration after he played such a good game.

He was key to Newcastle being resolute, battling away in midfield all game. He won 12 duels in the tie and also won five free-kicks, proving himself to be a real nuisance to Wolves. Guimaraes had a 100% dribble success rate in the game and found his target in four long balls from five attempts.

Newcastle built a 10-point cushion to the drop zone following the win and now look good value to remain in the Premier League as they sit 14th in the table heading into Saturday’s games.
