Journalist Luke Edwards has been speaking on the BBC’s Football Daily podcast about the transfer budget Newcastle United may have this summer.

Newcastle United were the Premier League’s big spenders during the January transfer window as owners PIF got to flex their financial muscles for the first time, and with the signings of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes, they appear to have made a statement of intent given the former won La Liga last season and the latter was linked with a move to Arsenal.

Will PIF back Howe this summer?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

PIF handed Eddie Howe a hefty transfer budget in January that saw him splash out around £90m, but fans expecting the same to happen this summer without any player sales going back into the club’s coffers may be slightly disappointed.

Edwards doesn’t believe that the club’s new owners will be looking to spend a vast amount of millions this summer.

He said: “They don’t want that instant success, they’re going to build gradually. I think top 10 next season will be seen as success. I don’t think they’re going to spend millions and millions this summer.

“I think people out there who are going to do this fantasy football stuff that they’re going to go off and sign these superstar signings, they’re going to spend £200m – there’s a slight detachment from the dream and the reality of how things are going to happen at Newcastle.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

“It’s not up for me to say that, I have these conversations with people in private, I’ve done stories about it in The Telegraph. But it’s actually at some point, the owners are going to have to come out and talk about what the business model is, what they want to achieve.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s potential summer spending…

Slaven Bilic has recently claimed that Newcastle’s new owners are willing to spend again in the upcoming transfer window, which clashes with what Edwards has said, but does show why someone such as Amanda Staveley should come out and talk about the project and how they are looking to grow Newcastle.

Edwards has previously reported in The Telegraph that Howe’s budget is set to be £60m, which seems like a very small amount of money compared to PIF’s wealth, but if he is able to move on players who have all not featured a lot under him such as Dwight Gayle, Miguel Almiron and potentially captain Jamaal Lascelles, the manager’s budget could rapidly shoot up through those player sales.
