Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Benfica striker Darwin Nunez is on the radar of Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window.

There have been reports stating that Manchester United are joined by Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea as the three frontrunners on the hunt for Darwin Nunez’s signature. Nunez signed for Benfica in 2020 from UD Almeria for £21.6m.

Nunez has been in emphatic goalscoring form this season for Benfica, scoring 32 goals in 37 games in all competitions this term, and this has caught the eye of Manchester United.

With Manchester United reportedly interested in the 22-year-old, Jones had his say on the speculation when talking to GiveMeSport.

Jones said: “He and his representatives are definitely open to the idea of landing in the Premier League, of course they are; it’s the most lucrative league in the world.

“It’s the highest level you can play at at the moment, in terms of domestic football, and Manchester United are definitely aware of his situation and are considering it if they do sign a striker.”

TIF Thoughts on Dean Jones’ comments…

Nunez, who former Benfica boss Jorge Jesus claimed ‘will be the best in the world’, has been superb for the Portuguese outfit this term. In the Primeira Liga, he has 20 goals in 24 matches, has an average match rating of 7.49 and an average of 3 shots per game, as per SofaScore. This impressive form has caught the attention of many European giants.

Manchester United have also been linked with Harry Kane ahead of the summer transfer window, but with Nunez being just 22 years old, he could be a better long-term option for the Red Devils.

The Uruguayan striker will surely want to play in the Champions League and scored six goals in 10 games in the competition this campaign, so may not be keen on dropping to a team that does not play in Europe’s top tournament.
