Journalist Conor McGilligan has criticised Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier for the way he sets up the wall when defending free-kicks.

The Frenchman was mocked by Perry Groves for having ‘chocolate wrists’ after his mistake against Newcastle United.

Will Illan Meslier become a world-class goalkeeper?

And, it looks as if the goalkeeper is now receiving even more criticism as while speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, Conor McGilligan explained how Meslier can often be at fault when defending set-pieces.

He said (14:36): “When Leeds give fouls, you know, around our box, we normally suffer. It seems to go in every single time and Meslier is caught out.

“So yeah, I think Meslier struggles a little bit with lining this wall up if I’m honest with you on free-kicks.

“I think that’s something that drastically needs to improve going into the future. It’s a development on his game.”

TIF thoughts on Illan Meslier and Leeds…

Maxwell Cornet netted against the club from a set-piece for Burnley. Jonjo Shelvey did the same back in January with Newcastle United, and more recently James Ward-Prowse did what he does best for Southampton.

With all that in mind, it’s easy to see why McGilligan has come to this conclusion. Indeed, Meslier was the man beaten on each of those occasions so he must take a fair slice of the blame.

Still, at just 22 years of age, the Frenchman is learning as a top-flight goalkeeper. But as McGilligan says, it’s a part of his game he perhaps needs to develop and improve in the future.
