Everton’s season to date couldn’t have gone much worse, they’ve got themselves heavily embroiled in a relegation fight, with things potentially going to get even worse at Goodison Park.

Greg O’Keeffe and Patrick Boyland of the Athletic have been looking into the accounts at Goodison Park after the losses were announced for 2020/21. The Toffees lost over £120 million in that year, although Covid will have been a factor.

Between 2017 and 2020, Everton recorded a combined loss of £260m, that’s £155m more than they are permitted to lose to comply with financial fair play (FFP).

Pete O’Rourke had the following to say on the matter: “Everton fans are probably worrying after breaking FFP regulations and that maybe there could be a points deduction coming up as well. So, we’ll have to wait and see.”

TIF thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

It’s certainly a worrying time for the blue half of Merseyside, as if a points deduction was to hit this season it could see them relegated to the Championship. As things stand they’re only three points clear of the drop zone, although they do have a couple of games in hand on those below them.

Which manager used to play for Everton's academy?

Whether or not Everton will receive a points deduction remains to be seen. The only thing we know is it could have disastrous consequences for the club, especially this season, with their Premier League safety far from a certainty.
