According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Aston Villa will look to replace Mohamed Trezeguet this summer, with the Egypt international expected to depart.

Signed in the summer of 2019, 27-year-old Trezeguet has made 64 appearances for the Villans, scoring nine goals. However, he moved to Istanbul Baseksehir during the January transfer window, with him seemingly surplus to requirements at Villa Park after featuring just once in the Premier League this term.

Do you remember where Aston Villa made their signings from? Take our quiz to find out! First up, who did Frederic Guilbert turn out for immediately before moving to Villa Park?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke indicated Steven Gerrard and Co will look to replace Trezeguet, with his loan spell potentially just a precursor to a permanent move. He said, “Villa are probably going to lose a couple of wingers in the summer with El Ghazi out on loan at Everton and Trezeguet out on loan in Turkey.

“So, that’s two wingers who the club will most likely look to move on. So, it’s going to be an area that Steven Gerrard will be looking to strengthen as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Trezeguet

Trezeguet, who is valued at £9 million (as per Transfermarkt), was a constant goal threat in the Super Lig before his move to England, scoring 25 goals in 71 games for Kasimpasa, and he has continued where he left off on his return to Turkey. For Basaksehir, he has found the back of the net five times in nine outings, also providing two assists.

It is a league he appears to enjoy, but that just hasn’t translated to the English top flight. Gerrard has a whole host of options on the flanks, including Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey, Bertrand Traore and Philippe Coutinho. With so much competition, it is no wonder Trezeguet found it hard to nail down a regular starting spot.

Gerrard is said to be looking for Champions League-level players, and Trezeguet just hasn’t shown that he fits into that category. A summer transfer, therefore, seems the best solution for all involved.
