Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter is firmly on the radar of Aston Villa.
Matthias Ginter has been linked with a move away from the Bundesliga and Aston Villa are reportedly one of the clubs interested in his signature. Steven Gerrard brought Lucas Digne and Calum Chambers to Villa Park in January, but he is seemingly looking to improve his defence even further in the summer.

Aston Villa have recently experienced a slight dip in form, losing four games on the bounce before stopping the rot somewhat with a goalless draw at Leicester City.
After Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Ginter, O’Rourke claimed to GiveMeSport that the links show the ambition of the club.
“I think these are the types of players that Aston Villa should be looking at, but there will be big competition for these players as well. Ginter is available for a free from Monchengladbach in the summer and I think there’s a lot of interest across Europe in him. But it just shows that Aston Villa do have a lot of ambition because they’re actually in the market for these types of signings,” O’Rourke said.

Matthias Ginter’s current contract with Monchengladbach is up in the summer, so the 28-year-old defender will be available on a free transfer. In the Bundesliga he has been in fine form, he has the fourth-highest average player rating in his squad (6.96), he has the second-highest average clearances per game (2.8), and has the second-highest amount of accurate passes on average per game (54.8), as per Sofascore.
Aston Villa’s recent blip in form has meant that they have slipped down to 15th in the league table, so the chances of them signing high calibre players may have dropped. However, they are still heavily linked with Ginter and if they can get him on a free transfer in the summer then it would be a great sign of intent.
