Tottenham Hotspur were far from vintage as they travelled to Brentford. They needed to win to keep tabs on Arsenal in fourth and now trail by two points with just five games to go, with a north London derby between the two still to come.

After what was a very poor opening 45 minutes in general, journalist Alasdair Gold dropped a damning claim on the squad in his half-time analysis. The game didn’t improve either, with the game petering out to a 0-0 draw.

Writing for Football.london, Gold went into detail, saying the following at the interval: “That was another poor half of football with a real lack of cohesion and creativity and a touch of nerves in much of what they did.

“Antonio Conte was unhappy with the lack of pace in Spurs’ attempts to move the ball around against Brighton and so far this has been no different at the Brentford Community Stadium.

“Brentford have struck the crossbar through Ivan Toney’s header from a corner and it was a moment that was coming because the striker had been left all alone to receive the ball on three previous corners without the visitors learning from their mistakes.

“Tottenham’s front three have been anonymous again with both wing-backs struggling to make advances up the pitch, ensuring Spurs are playing with a back five most of the time.”

It’s certainly a worry for Antonio Conte, as the fact the players couldn’t seem to get up for such a huge game at a pivotal part of the season isn’t a good sign. With just five games remaining, the chance to qualify for the Champions League next season is still in the hands of Spurs, though they will have to beat Arsenal in order to secure a top-four berth.

Conte’s side are now outside of the top four in the table, but are just two points adrift of Arsenal after today’s goalless draw. There is still a chance they do clinch that coveted fourth Champions League spot, but they will likely have to be perfect, claiming 15 points from the remaining five games to do so.
