Football writer Charles Watts has slammed Alexandre Lacazette for his dreadful display in Arsenal’s recent loss.

With a spot in the top four on the line, the Gunners needed a big response against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend having lost to Crystal Palace in their previous match. Sadly, however, they got the opposite as Mikel Arteta’s men fell to a limp 2-1 defeat at home.

It seems that one player in particular failed to impress and Watts singled Lacazette out for criticism while speaking on his YouTube channel. Indeed, the journalist said the Frenchman’s inability to make himself relevant in the game was just ‘staggering’.

Should Alexandre Lacazette start Arsenal's next game?

“I know I said that Lacazette was isolated,” he said. “But he made eight passes when he was on the pitch in the whole game. I mean, that’s just a staggering stat.

“He was that irrelevant to the match, he made eight passes, and you know, that’s worrying.”

He added: “Lacazette is just so out of sync at the moment, so out of form. And he’s just not causing defenders any sort of issues whatsoever in any part of the game.

“I felt like he shouldn’t have played on Saturday, he did. I really feel like you shouldn’t be in the team this coming Saturday.”

TIF Thoughts on Alexandre Lacazette and Arsenal…

Since Christmas, the Arsenal forward has netted just twice, and both of those goals have come from the penalty spot. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why some concerns may be growing over Lacazette.

Against Brighton, he clearly did little to ease those fears. Indeed, as Watts mentions, he only attempted eight passes – to put things in perspective, substitutes Nicolas Pepe and Eddie Nketiah both completed more (via Opta).

Add to that, the fact he managed to have no shots at goal, and it doesn’t paint a pretty picture at all (via SofaScore).

Taking it all into account, it’s hard to argue with Watts’ frustration.
