Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has taken to Instagram after the club’s Europa League victory to hail goalkeeper Allan McGregor for his display on Thursday night.

The Gers put on a show for the Ibrox faithful on Thursday as they put one foot into the quarter-finals of the Europa League with a convincing 3-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade.

Their 40-year-old goalkeeper stole the headlines with a stunning save from the spot to keep his clean sheet intact, with the home side two goals to the good at the time.

And it was apparent Gerrard loved what he saw from his former goalkeeper as he took to Instagram to share his thoughts after McGregor was hailed by the official club account.

The Rangers account posted two images of the goalkeeper and his important save, to which the current Aston Villa boss commented with a couple of emojis to show his appreciation:

It was an impressive display from the Scotsman, who made four saves during the 90 minutes against a side who have already scored 65 goals in their respective domestic league.

McGregor played a huge role under Gerrard during the Englishman’s time in the dugout at Ibrox, having made 156 appearances for the young manager across all competitions.

And the 40-year-old shot-stopper has continued between the sticks since Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s appointment, with 21 appearances in total and 13 clean sheets to his name (via Transfermarkt).

A busy week is ahead for the Gers as they face Dundee in the Scottish Cup on Sunday and then travel to Serbia for the second leg against Red Star.

With the league still very much to play for and one foot in the final eight of the European competition, could Van Bronckhorst look to make some changes at some point to his starting XI over the next week?
