Scott Arfield might be on his way out of the Rangers side following reports that have emerged about Gustavo Hamer.

Arfield has been a prominent member of the Rangers side this season, racking up five goals and one assist, while occasionally drifting away from his preferred and natural position of centre-midfield but helping the side put up a decent fight when it comes to the Scottish Premiership title race.

However, transfer news that has emerged could mean that his days at Ibrox are numbered.

According to a report from Football League World, Rangers, along with a number of other sides, are continuing to keep their eye on Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer. Reports back in the summer hinted that they were after him, but one key change at Ibrox may change things…

Who is Gustavo Hamer?

Who followed James Tavernier to Rangers from Wigan Athletic in the same season?

Whilst he is now a member of the Sky Blues in the English Championship and has done an impressive job there so far, with seven goals and nine assists in his 69 appearances for them in the second tier, he has worked with Giovanni van Bronckhorst before when they were at Feyenoord. The Gers boss actually gave him his Eredivisie debut back in 2017.

And whilst he didn’t play that much under the Dutchman, he was still a part of the squad and made the bench on a few more occasions. Now, though, it appears that Van Bronckhorst wants to reunite the two in Glasgow.

Why Arfield should be worried

Even though Arfield, who is valued at £1.44m (as per Transfermarkt), has been a regular for the side this season, he will be without a contract at the end of the season. Meanwhile, given he was brought in under a previous regime, he may have been some use to Van Bronckhorst up to this point, but he may not have any real loyalty to him.

Add into the equation his age, 33, and compare it to Hamer’s at just 24 and it does start to look as if Van Bronckhorst is looking to mould the side in his own image and work with players that could be here for the next few years rather than just what is going on in the present.

TIF Verdict…

It is just the natural order of things for someone like Arfield. He has been a good servant for Rangers over the years, and when a new manager comes in, they’ll want to put their own mark on things and bring in players that they are more comfortable with.

And whilst Hamer and Van Bronckhorst’s relationship mainly stems from when he was a lot younger, the fact that he is showing some interest in him now might indicate that he has been watching his career progress and thinks that he might be able to bring something to the current Rangers side – and he should be allowed to do that.

Even if it does mean losing a veteran like Arfield along the way, at least he’ll have left the club in a good place – winning the league title last year and helping them put up a fight in 2021/22.
