Patrick McGilp has claimed that Celtic Callum McGregor has been an adequate replacement as captain for Scott Brown, who left Celtic Park in the summer.

McGregor has been a regular in the Celtic side this campaign, featuring 25 times in the Scottish Premiership whilst scoring and assisting twice, according to Transfermarkt.

Scott Brown joined Celtic in 2007 but left the club at the end of the 2020/21 campaign to join Aberdeen. It was recently announced that Brown had retired from football, after playing in 24 SPFL games for his new side this season.

McGilp spoke on the A Celtic State of Mind podcast and identified the role McGregor has taken on following Brown’s departure from Celtic Park.

He said: “He’s obviously got big shoes to fill in Scott Brown. I think he’s filled them immensely in the nine or so months he’s had the captain’s armband.”

TIF Thoughts on Callum McGregor…

McGregor stepped up from vice-captain last campaign for Celtic and has been a real leader on the pitch this season, as the Hoops seek to bounce back after last season’s failure to win the Scottish Premiership.

Not only has McGregor stepped up to become captain this year, whilst showing his leadership qualities, he has also produced consistent performances on the pitch, and has an average match rating this season of 7.16, as per SofaScore.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has hailed praise towards McGregor this season for his influential performances, and after a 2-1 victory over Aberdeen in November, he said: “He leads by example and he’s a man of action and words and I thought he was outstanding today.”

So this only serves to back up McGilp’s comments and hopefully for Celtic, McGregor can lead the Hoops to more glory in the future.
