Football journalist Kieran Devlin has claimed ‘there will be inquests’ over the likely departure of talented Celtic youngster Ben Doak.

The Athletic recently reported that Liverpool are ‘closing in’ on the exciting teenage winger who currently plays in the Bhoy’s academy. The article explains, as he only turned 16 in November he has yet to sign a professional contract with Celtic, and so if the deal happens, his current club would only receive minor compensation for the move.

While commenting on the situation on Twitter, Celtic correspondent Devlin said that there will be great pain after losing another ‘huge talent’ but accepted that the Reds offer was too always going to be too tempting to turn down.

He wrote: “There will be inquests after yet another academy prospect leaves so soon, but I do think in this specific case Liverpool’s pitch was too strong to match even the most generous first-team pathway. Not that that lessens the pain of losing such a huge talent.”

TIF thoughts on Ben Doak and Celtic…

As Devlin alludes to in his Tweet, this would not be the first time a talented prospect has left Celtic far too early. Indeed, in the past few seasons, the likes of Liam Morrison and Barry Hepburn were picked up by Bayern Munich, Josh Adam went off to Manchester City, and Liam Hughes paved the way to Liverpool for Doak.

Despite being such a young age, the youngster has already made his senior debut for the club and had accumulated 25 minutes of football in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Will Ben Doak make it at Liverpool?

No

Liverpool must have noticed his quick acceleration into the first team and have act fast themselves to bring the player to England. No doubt, this will be a blow for all those at Celtic.

And while it may be hard to turn down such big moves for the club’s youngster, Devlin is right to suggest ‘inquests’ will be made while these exits just keep happening.
