Plenty of Wolves fans will be furious with the quality of defending from their players after their most recent loss.

On Friday night, Bruno Lage and co surrendered a 2-0 lead and eventually fell to a 3-2 home defeat against Leeds United. Indeed, after goals from Jonny and Francisco Trincao put them ahead, Jesse Marsch’s men hit back with strikes from Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Luke Ayling to steal all three points.

However, the defending on the equalising effort, scored in the 60th minute of the game, was particularly bad – with a comedy of errors occurring before the ball eventually hit the back of the net.

Will Wolves get European football next season?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Firstly, Dan James was allowed to get in too easily as he ran through on goal and struck the crossbar. Then, the Wolves defenders were slow to react as the ball bounced back into play and Jose Sa was forced into a save. Romain Saiss sliced his clearance and failed to win the second duel before Rodrigo nipped in ahead of everyone else to get the ball across the goalline via Conor Coady.

Leeds-based journalist Joe Donnohue shared the footage on Twitter and pointed out the ‘spectacular ball-watching’ from Willy Boly, who can be seen failing to do anything at all to help his team during the whole passage of play.

TIF Thoughts on Wolves and their defeat…

Fans will surely take no pleasure in watching the highlights back, while Boly’s involvement in this particular incident was partially shameful, although perhaps it’s a sign of how rusty he is. The defender has missed the bulk of the season with injury and this was only his second appearance in the Premier League during the current campaign.

The same excuse, however, does not apply to some of the other defenders. Indeed, the likes of Saiss and Coady have played a significant amount of minutes for the side this season.

The loss now means Wolves remain in eighth place in the table and are two points behind West Ham United as their push for European football next season begins to lose momentum.

Lage’s men have now lost four of their past six league outings and would have certainly expected a better result against Leeds, who are struggling down towards the bottom of the table.
